What We Believe

Zion Lutheran Church is a member congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. We believe first and foremost that Jesus Christ, the Son of God the Father, has been crucified on our behalf and raised again to new life so that all who believe in him might also rise again to new life.

We believe in the absolute authority of the Holy Bible as the ultimate rule and norm of Christian faith and doctrine. We also subscribe to the Lutheran Confessions in the Book of Concord as a true and binding exposition of Holy Scriptures. You can read and learn more about the Lutheran Confessions by clicking here.

We believe that God the Father created the heavens and the earth according to the account given in the book of Genesis. The world was created perfect, but the first people, Adam and Eve, introduced sin and death into the world by rebelling against God's command. God, not wanting to be separated from his children by sin forever, promised to send a Savior who would rescue mankind from sin.

Throughout history, God the Father has acted in our world countless times, especially among the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: the nation of Israel. Throughout the Old Testament era, God used the nation of Israel as his light to the world even though the Israelites themselves, like us today, were frequently flawed, foolish, and faithless.

We believe that, in loving response to humanity's sinfulness, God the Father sent his Son Jesus Christ into the world to save us from our sin. Jesus, who is by nature both fully God and fully man, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Israelite virgin Mary, suffered under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead, and 40 days later he ascended into heaven, where he now reigns over creation alongside his Father as Almighty God. On the last day Jesus will return to raise all who have died and judge between those who will live eternally with him and those who will suffer eternally apart from him.

All who believe in this story of salvation and entrust themselves to the love of God in Jesus Christ need not fear God's judgment, for Jesus has already borne the punishment for their sin so that all believers may be welcomed into God's eternal family. There is nothing we can do to earn a right standing before God; only faith in Jesus' death and resurrection can save us. Salvation is a free gift from God, given out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in us.

To give us faith to believe in that promise, God the Holy Spirit works in us through the Word of God and the Sacraments of the Church. Sinful man cannot by his own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ or come to him; it is only by the work of the Holy Spirit that he may believe. God promises to do this work through the hearing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as well as the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, by which he creates faith in people.
